Strategic Planning - Incorporating People Strategy

I have dozens of PowerPoint slides that I could share on this subject. I could also spark a debate about whether strategy or culture eats the other for breakfast. But more important than either of those things is this: depending on who is contracting and who is paying the bills, there can be huge disparities in the depth of analysis when formulating strategy. It’s something you should be wary of.

The Strategy Inc model has a maximum of seven steps. This depends on how much work you have already undertaken. And while uncomplicated, it can be really difficult to solidify commitments and begin to work towards your goal.

My aim is to help you deep-dive into your context, build out your options, test and prototype, and eventually discover what’s right for you in that moment. Things can change, so it’s important to remain agile and open to pragmatism based on your business environment.

Core People Essentials

We all love innovating. It’s exciting. It drives engagement and inspires our people to think differently.

But there’s something to consider first: in every single organisation I’ve worked in, the single most important thing has been line manager effectiveness. And that doesn’t involve any of the above. It’s about awareness, understanding and use of core people policies to ensure the organisation is run in the right, compliant way.

It’s not sexy, it’s not particularly innovative, but it’s essential.

Workshop

Bringing someone new into your thinking can create positive outcomes. It helps everyone participate in the session and doesn’t put pressure for outcomes on a single team member. Everyone is involved in working towards a solution. There are so many techniques to ensure you give your team the best possible opportunity to contribute.

You might want to brainstorm new ideas, existing strategy or operations. You could even go as far as (metaphorically) ripping it all up and starting again. That’s one way to disrupt your organisation. Setting yourself up for success is hard to achieve within your regular working week and won’t happen by itself.
